people's park thanksgiving banquet

Last night, if you chanced to stroll by People's Park here in Berkeley around 7:00 pm, you might have been spotted myself and a gather of other InterVarsity students serving and partaking in a meal with some of the people who live in or around the park, many of whom are homeless. People's Park is owned by the university, and it's a few blocks off campus, and it's known be a bit of a dodgy place--like I said, many who are homeless gather there.

InterVarsity and The Hep B Project partnered up to host a Thanksgiving Banquet for the people at People's Park, and anyone else in need or want of food. At the heart of it was not merely a want/need to do "good," because, well, believing and following God isn't just about getting enough of a dose of "Christianity" to feel good about yourself. This whole banquet was God's, at the heart of who He is. He loves all His children, He really does. Jesus charged His disciples to feed His people.

Last night, it was all God. He was the one who worked out tax ID complications when we were trying to get businesses to donate food. He was the one who provided us 16 loaves of bread from Semifreddi's, 12 from La Farine, and 20 from Acme. He was the one who blessed us with DK, who generously cooked three 20-lb turkeys for us. He was the one who made the weather perfectly clear that night. He was the one who guided me and upheld me, even during times when I should've been anxious and frazzled.

I am in awe of the work He does in us as we step out and follow His callings. One of the homeless men I got a chance to talk to came up to me towards the end of the banquet and asked, "Do you know you're perfect?" It was jarring and somewhat comical, but I just smiled. Sometimes I know it. I know that I am perfect in He who is perfection itself. Sometimes I don't, and I just cling to the hope that He is completing and making me whole, and that everything is in His hands.
